When I mention hypnosis to people, many come to the conclusion that being hypnotized must include some profound and dramatic sensations. And, as suggested by stage shows, it certainly seems like it would have to include some very strange feelings! However, the reality is that the most common sensation reported by my clients and by people who have undergone hypnosis, is simple relaxation. Everyone has experienced the state of hypnosis many times throughout the day without even realizing it: those so engrossed in a book or a movie that someone had to call their name several times before getting their attention. Or, when driving and missed a turn because the mind and attention has been elsewhere. At those times, the brainwaves would have been identical to someone officially in hypnosis (see below for more on brain wave activity).

The Beta brain-wave state
This is the normal, awake, conscious activity of the brain. The Beta state is high and rapid. It is a state of full alertness, physical activity and excitement.
The Alpha brain-wave state
This is the state of the beginning of relaxation. In this state the mind is relaxed but alert. It is a state of passive awareness, composure of physical and mental relaxation.
The Delta brain-wave state
This state is the brain-wave experienced in the deepest stages of sleep. It is a state of total unawareness. The Delta brain-wave is not reached in Hypnosis.
The Theta brain-wave state
This state is one of tranquility, creativity and very deep relaxation. It is usually the state at which we are awakening from a deep sleep. Emotional sensations experienced in the Theta state include restful alertness, day-dreaming and deep tranquility.
Research into hypnotic brain activity with electroencephalograms (EEG) has shown the existence of a strong relationship between Theta brain waves and hypnotizability
