I’ve started to do some research into MSM (Methyl-Sulphonyl-Methane) and have discovered some very interesting facts to do with some of the issues I’ve discussed in my blogs. 

MSM is a naturally occuring sulphur compound and stable, odourless dietary metabolite of DMSO (Dimethyl Sulphoxide).  It is a vital compound found in the body’s tissues and fluids.  Interestingly, it is made naturally in the human body from the amino acids methionine, taurine and cysteine (the most potent antioxidant I know!) 

Sulphur is necessary for:

The formation of collagen, keratin and elastin (thereby helps to maintain the body’s physical structure and tissues and so maintaining their elasticity and flexibility); 

Maintaining cell membrane permeability (allowing cells to absorb nutrients and expel waste properly;

Playing a role in tissue healing and repair;

The essential formation of antibodies;

The energy production within body cells;

Overall, MSM is a very important mineral for healthy hair, skin, nails, organs, joints and blood vessels.

Dietary MSM is found in eggs, raw meats, seafood, some fresh vegetables and fruits and milk.  Processing of these products, of course, destroys or greatly reduces actual MSM content.  Therefore, generally speaking, the body will be sulphur deficient unless raw meat and fish and unwashed and uncooked vegetables are eaten on a daily basis. 

MSM levels in the body naturally decline with age so a combination of deficiency and decline are reported to result in symptoms of fatigue, tissue and organ malfunction, and an increase in susceptibility to disease.   To be effective therapeutically, MSM should be taken frequently, ideally, every day.  Research has shown a daily dosage of between 250mg and 2,000mg to be beneficial, but in severe cases of deficiency much higher doses have been used.

I’ve been going to the Vitality Show in London consecutively for the last 7 years. As a complementary practitioner I like to keep up to date on what’s new and available and the show, for me, is both fun and informative. I meet many therapists and it provides a basis for my continuing research.

Having just returned home from this year’s show, I was very disappointed. Not only was it down-sized (from Olympia to Earls Earls Court 1), it was also heavily geared towards sports clothes, hair and beauty and many of the therapy workshops (aura readings, colour therapies, reflexology, Ayurvedic treatments, herbs and supplement stands) had disappeared, possibly due to the high costs of exhibiting there. This was a shame

However, I was delighted when I actually stumbled across what I feel is a gem of a company: Mercy Oil Products. Readers of my blogs will know that I have suffered from adrenal stress and have looked into a number of ‘alternative cures’. I’ve looked into and talked about Macca but I never actually got around to using it because I discovered Ashwagandha first. I’ve been using Ashwagandha for several months and I do believe it’s gone a long way in helping me. I’m starting to feel ‘normal’ again.

What is it?
Ashwagandha (meaning: strength of a horse) is a known herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Found in India, it’s an evergreen shrub the roots of which are used medicinally. It has a reputation for improving strength, energy and stamina.
It’s an adaptogenic herb suitable for long-term use (avoid if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding).

Stress
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen: a class of herbal medicines that improve energy and help the body adapt to stress. It relaxes the nervous system and increases strength and stamina. Excellent for promoting restful sleep; its antioxidant effects help immunity and increase white blood cell count and reduces arthritic pain and inflammation.

Research published in the journal of Phytomedicine (2000) found Ashwagandha was ‘comparable to some orthodox drugs for treating anxiety and depression’.

Stress has been referred to as the Silent Killer. Regardless of its intensity, we experience stress daily in our lives. This has intensified in the 21st century with its pollution, technological revolution, nutritional deficiencies and so. Stress is epidemic in the western world and our reaction to it is not always to our advantage.

Stress is a state of tension that is created when a person responds to the demands and pressures that come from work, family and other external sources, as well as which are internally generated. It is cumulative – it adds up over time until a state of crisis is reached and symptoms appear. These symptoms may manifest themselves psychologically as irritability, anxiety, impaired concentration, fatigue, impaired digestion, anger, the list goes on.
